First Bytes Computer Science Camp

This camp is no cost if you are accepted, and it is for high school girls only. The camp is held on the campus of UT in Austin.

First Bytes is an exciting step toward a fascinating college major and a challenging, lucrative, in-demand career. Computer science touches everything in today’s digital world. From cell phones, MP3 players and animation technologies, to medical devices, robotics and business applications, computer science is driving today’s technology.

What happens at camp?

The camp is fun, stimulating and action-packed. The experience includes:

  • computer labs where you will learn about programming and digital animation,
  • hands-on activities like tearing a computer apart to see how it is made,
  • field trips like the Texas Advanced Computing Center Visualization Lab and the da Vinci® Surgical System,
  • presentations on topics like artificial intelligence and exciting high-tech careers in computer science, and
  • lots of great food and fun shared with interesting new friends while getting a taste of UT and dorm life.
When is First Bytes Camp & how do I apply?

The camp will be held June 16-22, 2013.
Complete your online application and submit your transcript and
recommendation letter between January 29 and March 22 View criteria at www.cs.utexas.edu/outreach/first-bytes.
Sixty selected students will be notified of admittance by April 17.

Who should apply?

Apply if you are currently a female Texas high school sophomore or junior who shows academic achievement and
initiative, possesses problem-solving and creative skills, wants to know how things work, and enjoys logic, math or
computers! No computer programming experience is required – just a bright and curious mind.

What does it cost?

All costs for the camp, except travel to and from campus, are covered.
This includes meals, lodging, activities and field trips.
A $100 refundable registration deposit is required only upon admittance to the camp.
