Magnolia Homeschool Father Running for State REP

While EE cannot officially endorse candidates, I wanted to pass on this information about a local homeschool father who is running for State Rep. Students can gain valuable experience and community service as part of a campaign team.
We encourage all voters to take the time to learn about the candidates and also take the time vote.
Please feel free to send out to other homeschooling loops.
Elise

Dear Homeschooling Mother,

Hi Moms! As a fellow home school mother, I am so excited to announce that my husband, Troy Bonin, is running for State Rep.  Many of you know Troy as “The Dentist” from Magnolia.   After much prayer and many discussions our family decided that rather than wishing we had a representative with our values at the capitol, we would do something about it. So as a family and for our future we are running for office with Troy’s name on the ballot. The response has been overwhelming.  We truly have a tremendous opportunity as homeschoolers to have a voice in office that represents our values and will fight for our freedoms.

A little about us: Troy and I have been married for almost 23 years. We have ten kids: 20, 17, 16, 14, 12, 10, 7, 5, 3 and 7 months: five boys and five girls. When our oldest son was born, we joined a home school group and have home schooled from the beginning. We are conservative Christians. We believe in limited government and less government spending. Our extensive issues can be found on our website at www.troybonin.org. Please go to the site and read through our issues and share our flyer with all your friends.

COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS!!  - We need volunteers, AND THIS NEXT 6 WEEKS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUR HOMESCHOOLER TO LOG IN COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR COLLEGE APPLICATIONS:  We need families sending emails, knocking on doors,  making phone calls, and putting out signs.  Please forward this letter to all your homeschooling friends.  We need your help getting Troy’s name known throughout the community. Most people vote by name recognition. Our opponent, who is VERY PRO public school, which ultimately means higher taxes, has many signs and much campaign money. We are counting on our home school community to help us in this area. We have ordered about 500 yard signs. If you want one please call me, or email boninvolunteers@gmail.com . If you can distribute some, call me!!! This is a great opportunity to teach your homeschooled children about the political process and community service. We need YOU!  (Terri: 281-772-6675)

Donations: Every donation counts no matter how small. There are many costs associated with campaigning. You can donate on our website to help in this way.

Visit http://www.troybonin.org/help-troy-bonin-win.php

Early voting starts May 14.

God Bless,

Terri Bonin

LAST CALL! Stanford Testing at EE - SIGN UP by 3/31

Dear Extraordinary Education families,

Extraordinary Education will again be hosting standardized testing for those families who choose to test. A few spaces are still open in each grade level at this time.

 - STANFORD Achievement Test (SAT) on MAY 22, 23 & 24. (TUES, WED, THUR)

Register online at this link:
http://extraed.net/sat_2012

The SAT test will be ordered by families individually and administered as a group at the EE campus. The test results will be delivered directly to each family privately. Elise Eaton is coordinating STANFORD testing at EE this year.

Please take some time to look over information about the test before registering.
Basic testing information can be found on the BJU Press website:
http://www.bjupress.com/testing/stanford.php

Please register your child to test by completing the online form at the link below. A separate email will be sent out to registered families with further information about the Stanford Test procedures and how to order the test for your child/children.

http://extraed.net/sat_2012

THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER IS MARCH 31.
Tests will be ordered the first week of April. (Please do not order any tests until you receive instructions!)

NOTE: SAT TESTING AT EE IS OPEN TO ALL AREA HOMESCHOOLERS. There will not be a Facility Fee for current EE students to take the Stanford test. There will be a Facility Fee of $5 PER STUDENT for non-members to help cover utilities, paper goods and other expenses. Priority will also be given to current EE students if space is a issue.

In order to provide this opportunity for our students we need parents to serve as testers and also fill other volunteer jobs. Please indicate your volunteer preferences when you complete the registration form. (Note: To be a tester you need to have a college degree and register with BJU as a tester. They also have a short video to watch that I can provide.)

It is important to point out that standardized testing is NOT required in Texas. We offer testing to families as a way to help parents assess their child's progress and assist them in making curriculum and course choices. It is also important to note that the "SAT" we will be administering is NOT the same "SAT" that students take for college entrance.

Extraordinary Results at PSIA Contest

The District 12AA PSIA Academic Competition took place on Saturday, March 24th, at Trinity Lutheran School. Students representing many private schools as well as homeschools participated in this event. Homeschoolers took home numerous awards - and several will be headed to the STATE Competition in May!

The students named below placed within the top 6 in the events listed. Placing within the top 6 is a worthy achievement for any student. The title for each section lists the homeschool group or individual family that the student represented at the PSIA tournament - but all are homeschooled.

The PSIA State AA Tournament will be held at TCU in Fort Worth on April 28th. Students who placed 1st or 2nd in most events are qualified to compete at the State level. Students who placed 3rd (2nd in certain events) are qualified as the State Alternate

A great deal of time and energy goes into preparing for an event like this. Be sure to congratulate these extraordinary homeschooled students when you see them. And good luck at STATE!

For information about the PSIA program please see http://www.psiaacademics.org/

Roadwork Update

A number of parents had mentioned previously that they would be very happy to donate toward fixing the potholes in our road. So far, we have only raised a total of $125 toward roadwork. Since we need a minimum of $5,000 to repair the potholes and $20,000 to resurface the entire road system, we are a long way from fixing the problems.

Our property owners have been extremely generous over the past several years, but the recent expenses for tree removal, roof repairs and fence repairs have really taken their toll. Although we rent the property, it is our own heavy use of the roads that is deteriorating them so quickly. So it is as much the responsibility of our organization to help with road repairs as it is the property owners.

If you would like to make a donation toward the road project, please give your check to the House Manager or to Jennifer, our Office Manger at your earliest convenience. If each family who uses the road would make a small donation of $25-$50 we could achieve a lot. All donations are tax-deductible.

Have a wonderful rest of your spring break!

EXCEED COLLEGE PREPARATORY ACADEMY
at Extraordinary Education

EXCEED Academy is a unique college preparatory program combining the advantages of parent directed education with the support of a learning coach and a learning community. It is designed to be a complete, individualized, college preparatory program for students in 5th-12th grade. A variety of scheduling  options are available to help families manage time commitments and finances.

The EXCEED program is designed to meet the needs of families looking for an educational alternative that offers the individualization of a parent-directed education; the flexibility of university-style classes; the social support and interaction of weekly classes with fellow classmates; and the educational support of a learning coach and personal mentor. The cost of the program is higher than individual homeschool classes alone but lower than other private school options in the area. The amount of parental involvement and supervision expected is lower than for most other homeschool options, but parental support and supervision is vital to the student's success. EXCEED is a homeschool program. It is not a full-time school alternative.

An EXCEED Academy advisor will be available to talk with parents at our Open House on March 20th. Appointments for new EXCEED Academy enrollments can be scheduled beginning April 1st.

Extraordinary Education Campus location:
9522 Carraway, Magnolia, TX 77354

Note: We are NOT actually located in Magnolia!
We are located about 2 miles SOUTH of Woodlands Parkway off of FM 2978. Carraway Lane is located between Woodlands Parkway and FM 2920 near Tomball.

State Mock Trial Competition Update

The Extraordinary Education Mock Trial Team attended the Texas State Mock Trial Competition held in Dallas on March 2-3, 2012. The team held their own each round and all team members should be very proud of their performance. They earned a 1-3 record which does not do justice to the outstanding presentations they made.

Several of our students were nominated by judges in their rounds for Outstanding Advocate and Outstanding Witness, although none received enough nominations to win an award. Only one student per round can be nominated by each judge for these awards. Congratulations go to these students:

Outstanding Advocate nominations:

  - Karina Brisack
  - Jacob Phillip
  - Michael Eaton
Outstanding Witness nominations:
  - Stephen Rosenberger (3)
  - Kristen Arias
  - Michael Eaton

In their first round, our first year team was matched against a very seasoned team and performed extremely well. That team, Creekview High School, would eventually go on to win 2nd place in this year's State contest. We received one nomination in this round for Outstanding Advocate: Jacob Phillip. The team only lost one ballot by a single point and another ballot by 3 points, so they were very competitive against this experienced team.

In the second round, our team again met a team with a distinguished record. That team, El Paso (America), won the State championship last year and went on to win 5th place at Nationals. They would go on to place 7th overall in the State competition this year. Our team received three nominations in this round for Outstanding Witness: Stephen Rosenberger (2) and Kristen Arias (1). The round was actually a split decision with our team winning one ballot and narrowly losing the other two.

In the first two rounds our team met well prepared, experienced teams and made each opposing team work for their win. In the third round, our team met a less experienced team and did win. In this round we received two nominations for Outstanding Witness: Stephen Rosenberger and Michael Eaton. We also received one nomination for Outstanding Advocate: Karina Brisack.

In the fourth round, our team again met a more experienced team and had a very good round. Again, each ballot was a narrow loss by only 3-5 points. Our team received one nomination for Outstanding Advocate in this round: Michael Eaton. The judge who nominated Michael was also one of the case writers this year. We did not receive any nominations for Outstanding Witness in the round. The best witness from the opposing team was very good, and would go on to win the 2nd place Outstanding Witness award.

Through the mock trial experience all of the students learned valuable lessons in the areas of team development, personal growth and maturity, and now have a greater understanding of our country’s legal system. We are looking forward to growing our Mock Trial program in the future.
