Greece 2018: Traveling in the Footsteps of Paul the Apostle

world-heritage-parthenonIf you always wanted to visit the sites of Ancient Greece, travel on a cruise ship in the Aegean Sea, pop on over to Turkey for a little visit, and explore the cities and towns related to the Apostle Paul's journey to spread Christianity, then the Extraordinary Education March 2018 Spring Break eleven day trip is going to be perfect for you (and your family)!

We've chosen a new travel company for this trip (better meals -- with three entrĂ©e choices for dinner, better hotels, they carry your luggage to your room for you, headsets for all, and more) and with that comes the ability for families to travel together, no matter the age of the children (although we still don't recommend these types of trips for any child under the age of ten.)  All adults ages 18 and up are welcome to travel with our group with no restrictions; teens aged 16 & 17 can travel without their own parent if they have a "surrogate/chaperone" parent traveling with them.

If you would like to learn about the March 2018 trip "In the Footsteps of Paul the Apostle" to Greece and Turkey, then please click on the link below to watch a 35 minute webinar that contains an overview of the trip and most of the details you will need to get started. Once you click on the link and sign in the webinar will begin playing and you can pause at any time and restart. (The opening page says it's 55 minutes long, but it's only 35 minutes!)

Please email Renee Campbell at rcampbell@extraed.org with additional questions or to enroll on the trip. I look forward to traveling with you all!
Renee Campbell, Tour Leader

PS  Anyone who signs up for the trip between now and September 8th will get a $200 discount per traveler, and if you purchase the insurance you can get all of your money refunded (even the insurance fee) up until September 8, 2017 for ANY reason!  After September 8th, IF you have purchased the insurance, you may cancel up until the day before the trip for any reason and get a full refund minus the insurance money.  It's practically risk-free to sign up for this trip!

Extraordinary PSIA Results!

CONGRATULATIONS to our extraordinary students who competed at the PSIA District 12AA Contest this past Saturday, April 1st. Placing at this event is quite an achievement since this was the "AA" contest and our students were competing against larger schools. In fact, our total score was higher than a couple of the other large private schools.
Three of these outstanding students are now qualified to move on the the STATE contest to be held in Fort Worth at the end of April. Be sure to congratulate these students when you see them!

EE Fall 2017-Spring 2018 Schedule

It’s here! You can preview the proposed Fall 2017-Spring 2018 Schedule at the link below.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ucFKJa2uE7yn0x1D9bKp9_Ndo3JsDaqLeJchrfzeiTo/pubhtml

Hopefully, we won't have any monkey-wrenches thrown in by teachers leaving, changing their mind on classes, etc. But I am sure you all know that it not a guarantee.

Dana is working hard over the break to input class data into ClassJuggler so we can start registration later this month. It is a LONG and TEDIOUS process, so be sure to thank her for her hard work!

Please keep in mind that current families will have a chance to register for at least TWO WEEKS before we open it up to new families. Hopefully we will be able to start registration by mid-March and then open it up to new families the first week of April. If you want to secure your child’s spot in specific classes you are strongly encouraged to register as soon as you can. As you know, space in our classes is very limited.

Have a super blessed Spring Break!

Upcoming Events

Open House/Maker Meetup
Thursday, Feb 9
at 7:00pm
Come check out what’s happening!

Adobe/Autodesk - Users Group will have its first meeting on Monday, Feb 13th from 7-9 pm. The vision for this group is to share tips & tricks and learn from one another. Interest thus far is in Photoshop, Premiere, InDesign, Illustrator, After Effects, Fusion 360, and 3DS Max. All skill levels are welcome.

Woodlands Astronomy Club will meet on Feb 16th at 7pm. Topic will be on the celestial coordinates system since mastering them is essential to finding objects and thoroughly enjoying the hobby. If you have a star map, plan to bring it.
The Star Party had a great turnout. The MakerBarn is a very good site, good wide view of the sky and good viewing conditions for even small telescopes. If you missed it, there will be another Sat., Feb 25th.

TinkerTime! has 4 weeks left. Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6 pm.  Students can explore different tools, techniques, and work on small guided projects. Cost is free to MakerBarn member families, non-member students may participate for $10/class. If you're planning on dropping in, please let us know ahead so that we may adequately prepare. info@themakerbarn.org

THURSDAY MAKER LUNCH, 2/16/17
If you are free for lunch, join the Makers at Fuddruckers in The Woodlands, 2290 Buckthorne Place. Noon - 1:30
Look for us in the back room.

... In case you were wondering, the MakerBarn is now up to 74 members. :)

LET's TALK

MakerBarn Discussion Forum

A discussion forum for all MakerBarn members is now available on the MakerBarn website.  The discussion forum has multiple boards with various MakerBarn discussion topics. We envision it being handy for sharing ideas, asking for assistance and partnering on projects, coordinating bulk buys, etc. Note that posting to the forum is limited to members only but it will be publicly view-able.
For more information about MakerBarn membership or discussion boards, please e-mail: info@themakerbarn.org

Our Newest Addition -

In 1938, a company in Bridgeport Connecticut started building and selling milling machines. These machines were different than most being built. These machines were designed to be very versatile and fill the needs of small job shops and tool rooms. Over the years thousands of Bridgeport style machines have been manufactured by Bridgeport and others all around the world.

We now have a Bridgeport milling machine at The MakerBarn.

A vertical milling machine looks much like a drill-press. It can be used to drill holes, but it can do much more. Think of it as a way to precisely carve metal. It can make precision flat surfaces and angles. It can cut slots and cutouts. It can be used to bore precision holes at almost any diameter. With the proper tools, it can even make gears. A skilled operator can work to tolerances of 0.001”, or about half the width of a hair.

Our Bridgeport has a table 9” wide and 48” long. The table can move 12 inches in the “Y” direction and 36 inches in the “X” direction. The location of the table is displayed on a digital readout. The quill (which carries the spindle) can move up and down 5 inches, and the knee (the table sits on the knee) can move 16 inches up and down. The machine has a 2 horse-power motor and weighs about 2,200 pounds. It was purchased at auction from Conroe ISD. Like most school machines, it has a few oopses on the table, but like most, has had very little usage over the years so it is in excellent condition.

There are several different types of cutters and other tools used with the vertical mill. Most often endmills are used for cutting horizontal and vertical surfaces. Endmills look almost like drill bits except they are designed to cut sideways as well as on the end. Since, in the course of learning how to use the machine, endmills get broken and otherwise ruined, each user will be supplying their own endmills. A set of endmills can be purchased online at reasonable prices. More about that later.

Although learning to use the mill can be intimidating and it does take some time to be proficient, the effort will be well worth it.

COMING SOON...

Resin Casting! You may have noticed the new "resin casting" cart upstairs. After you make a part on one of our 3D printers you may use this new equipment to make a silicone rubber mold of the part and then cast multiple copies of it using your rubber mold and special casting resin. The equipment is being tested now - see John Buckley if you would like to participate in the test and stay tuned for a demonstration night planned for early April.

REMINDERS:
- Please make sure that you are signing in when you enter the MakerBarn. This information helps us better manage time and resources and also helps to show the impact we are making in the community.

NO SMOKING - Just a friendly reminder. Our Rules and Policies Code of Conduct states: Consuming alcohol and smoking – cigarettes, cigars, vaporizers (also known as electronic cigarettes) – is not allowed anywhere on EE property.
The full Policy is available on the website under the Memberships tab. Please take time to review it.

For New Members

WELCOME !!  If you have not filled out an application with an Emergency Contact and Liability Waiver, please stop by the barn and do so. You can also pick up your RFID cards from the barn manager on duty. Most of the RFID secured equipment has safety manuals available to review. George or Greg can direct you in getting checked out.

The phone number at the barn is 832-663-6390.  Please remember that this is volunteer/member led program. There is no staff. We currently have 12 volunteer Barn Managers that are keeping the space open per the website calendar. If you would like information on becoming a Manager, contact John Buckley. There's no pay, but there are a few perks. :)
We look forward to seeing you at the Barn!

Is there truth or a moral law that we can all know? If we know what is right, can we do it? What does it mean to be human, and why does it matter? How do we rebuild and apply ethics and morality in the marketplace and public life?

HANDS ON FUN @8:15 – 9:00

We'll start the year off with another team exercise in creative thinking and problem solving.

In an effort to better address the needs of both our older and younger members, we will be trying out a 3-part schedule: Video Session / Teaching Session / Hands-On Fun. The videos are approximately 30 min in length and will begin at 6:45 sharp. Younger students who may not wish to participate in this portion of the meeting may arrive later, around 7:30. If you arrive prior to 7:30, you are expected to participate in the viewing and discussion. There are NO exceptions. Students may not wander the barn unsupervised.

If you need more information, feel free to contact Jeanie or Jessie James. 281-850-2158 / 832-492-7932 or email myecdirector@gmail.com.

DISTRICT 12AA CONTEST
Saturday, April 1, 2017
Trinity Lutheran School, Spring, TX

With 19 contest categories covering a wide range of disciplines, PSIA is an exciting opportunity for students to engage in academic competition with their peers throughout the state of Texas. PSIA contests span all levels from Grade 1 to Grade 8 —and PSIA is open to homeschoolers, too!

102_2296PSIA programs are designed to support the basic academic curriculum. Contest preparation is easily implemented into daily studies, and participation in academic meets serves to enrich skills. PSIA academic contests are designed to motivate students to find new excitement in learning, achieve a higher mastery level, and receive recognition and awards for academic excellence. Several local homeschoolers have even won scholarships through their involvement with PSIA!

Extraordinary Education's group membership allows us to send up to 3 students per grade/age level per event to the local District 12AAcompetition. Students who do well at the District level may go on to the State tournament. It is time to register students for these competition slots!
REGISTER for the EE Team Here

Please check out the contest descriptions on the PSIA website at www.psiaacademics.org then let us know ASAP if your student is interested in filling any slots on our team. There are a limited number of slots available for each event, and slots are filled on a first come basis.

NOTE: PSIA rules allow students to compete up to two grade levels above their current grade level but they can never compete below level. Also, a homeschooled student’s grade placement is determined according to their age on September 1st (the grade they would be in public school.) It can benefit an advanced student to compete with their age-mates in academic contests.
