Houston Model UN Summer Camp (7/23-8/2)

From: Maureen Brisack <maureenbrisack@sbcglobal.net>

Summer Greetings,

Want to learn more about Model UN and get a jump start for conferences in the fall? Consider attending a Houston area summer camp hosted by Lone Star College on July 23rd- August 2nd.  The Brisack Home is offering lodging for any out of town students.  Also – The Brisack Van is taking reservations for students who need transportation to the camp.  If you have a willing student – we'll make this summer camp happen!

The Lone Star Model UN Summer Camp will meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 5 (July 23 – August 2nd)  at the University Park Campus.  The instructor, Cassandra Khatri, is a dynamic professor and the camp fee is only $189.00 for two fantastic weeks of instruction. She has even offered to help our Model UN club next year -- as long as times don't conflict with her Lone Star Campus College MUN team -- what a great opportunity we have been given!

I met with Professor Khatri this summer and appreciated her enthusiasm for high school students' participation in Model UN.  While the websites below do not provide detailed information about the Model UN Prep Camp I do believe the director, Professor Khatri, will provide a rich and rewarding educational experience to the participants.  Professor Khatri plans to take the students through the entire process of preparing for a conference and on the last day of the summer program the students will participate in a mock committee session.

EE Road Repairs UPDATE

From: Jackie Pace <ashley-pace@sbcglobal.net>

Have you tried to drive on the Extraordinary Education campus lately?

You know a road repair job is sorely needed if you’ve been to EE in the past five months.

The EE Board & property owners are in total agreement.  But, oh, the expense!

We have had only one bid: $20,000 + tax for the full 700 feet (less for patching only).

The owners can manage only half that much so we are seeking more bids.

Do you know anyone in the asphalt or concrete roadway business?

If so, please tell them about the EE job. Bids are needed ASAP!

E-mail Jerry PACE concerning bids: jerry.pace@sbcglobal.net

Dual Credit at Extraordinary Education

Extraordinary Education is in the final stages of forming a partnership
with Lone Star College to offer dual credit classes at the EE campus
next year. This is a very exciting opportunity, and we are working hard
to make it a reality.

In order to offer these courses, we are looking for dynamic instructors
who are qualified to teach dual credit classes. We do already have
instructors for certain subjects, but we would like to be able to offer
other courses as well.

Potential instructors would have to meet EE qualifications (especially
be in agreement with our Statement of Faith) as well as Lone Star
qualifications (Masters degree with 18 hours of graduate credit in the
field in which you are teaching). Teacher certification is NOT required.
Pay rate would be comparable to Lone Star adjunct faculty with the
possibility of a bonus based on class size and course difficulty.

If you or someone you know would be interested in teaching a dual credit
class for us, please contact Elise Eaton at extraed@att.net as soon as
possible. Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you know who may be
a good candidate to teach for us.

The possibilities for dual credit classes are almost endless. See the
following web pages for a listing of various dual credit classes being
offered to local students.

Free Enterprise/Business Summer Camp

Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge is in Texas!

For the second summer, the Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge (FELC) will be conducted in Texas this summer.  In 2011, the program hosted a successful event on the campus of Houston Baptist University.  Due to popular demand, the program will again be held in Texas this summer on the campus of Northwood University in Cedar Hill, Texas, just 20 miles from the heart of Dallas.  During this five-day residential summer camp, high school-age participants will learn about entrepreneurship, the important role capitalism plays in our economy, principled leadership and ethical decision making (additional program details below).

FELC Session II
at Northwood University

June 24-28, 2012

Cost $100 (includes meals, housing and all activities)
Apply at www.felcexperience.org

What do students do?
A company competition is the core activity.  In small groups, students compete to form companies which produce, market and sell products.  Students learn about and create business plans, marketing plans and accounting records.  FELC is an interactive, fast-paced approach to learning, so it doesn’t stop with the company competition.  Students also participate in a Virtual Trade Mission project, speech and debate contests, the Laws of Life Essay Contest and receive hands-on principled leadership training.  FELC is unique because it offers students the opportunity to learn by doing.  Students who will be high school sophomores, juniors or seniors in fall 2012 and have demonstrated leadership potential and an interest in learning more about business are encouraged to apply.  The only cost for this program is a $100 registration fee (due after acceptance).

Visit the FELC website to learn more and apply: www.felcexperience.org
For questions please contact Lindsay Hollandsworth by email at lindsay@jessehelmscenter.org or by phone at (704) 233-1776, ext. 8.
